Tension has gripped residents of Akoko following the alleged rape and killing of an elderly woman by a young man believed to be in his early 20s in Iboropa Akoko, Akoko North-East Local Government Area of Ondo State.

The incident has thrown the community into mourning, with residents expressing shock and outrage over the development, while the suspect is currently in police custody.

A source in the community disclosed that the suspect was arrested following investigations by security operatives after the lifeless body of the woman was discovered under suspicious circumstances.

According to the source, the suspect was subsequently taken to the community by police officers to identify the scene of the incident. The development attracted a large crowd of residents, many of whom gathered to catch a glimpse of the suspect.

A video circulating on social media is also said to show the suspect speaking while in custody. However, the content of the video has not been officially confirmed, with residents suggesting it may be part of the ongoing investigation process.

The situation reportedly heightened tension in the area, as angry youths and other residents converged on the scene when the suspect was brought in. 

Security operatives were said to have intervened promptly to prevent a breakdown of law and order, swiftly moving the suspect away from the crowd.

As of the time of filing this report, the Ondo State Police Command has yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
