The Ondo State chapter of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) has called for increased opportunities, stronger protection and greater representation for women across different sectors of society.

The association made the call while commemorating the 2026 edition of International Women’s Day, urging women in the state to continue supporting one another and speaking up for equity and fairness.

In a statement jointly signed by the Chairperson of Ondo NAWOJ, Tola Gbadamosi, and the Secretary, Oluwatosin Ighoteguono, the association described the annual celebration as a reminder of the resilience, achievements and contributions of women to societal development.

The group noted that despite notable progress recorded by women in various fields, there is still a need for sustained advocacy and collective action to ensure inclusion, fairness and equal opportunities for women and girls.

According to the association, the theme for this year’s celebration, “Give to Gain,” highlights the importance of women empowering one another through collaboration, mentorship and the sharing of opportunities.

It therefore encouraged women across Ondo State to remain united and continue to support one another in both their personal and professional pursuits.

The association also stressed the importance of experienced women in the media industry guiding younger professionals to help them grow and succeed in the profession.

NAWOJ noted that mentorship and knowledge-sharing among women journalists would strengthen the profession and encourage more women to contribute meaningfully to the development of the media sector.

The group further advocated greater equity, safety and recognition for female journalists, noting that many women in the profession still face harassment, discrimination and intimidation while carrying out their duties.

It called on government, media organisations and other stakeholders to take deliberate steps to protect the rights of women journalists and ensure they can perform their professional responsibilities without fear or harassment.

The association also urged authorities to create an enabling environment that promotes gender equality and allows women to thrive in their respective careers.

NAWOJ added that more women should be given opportunities to occupy leadership and decision-making positions in both public and private sectors, stressing that such inclusion would help ensure that policies and programmes reflect the needs and aspirations of women and girls.
